Embattled Adobe should add their (now defunct) Flash Catalyst product to the Apache Foundaton, along with Flex. Why? Catalyst was a great idea that just has wrong timing. Catalyst was for the artistic side of the fence and Flex was for the developmetn side of the fence — together this combo was supposed to allow for richer interfaces for Flash enabled websites. A great thing indeed. Now Adobe is on to HTML5 (which just plain isnt ready; will be great eventually. but just not today).

So for the short term put the current version of Catalyst out there as Open Source. Then create a version that does flex (+) HTML5 when it stabilizes elevating yourselves as a company in the process. My 2cents…

Learning curve is a little strange but I am starting to ‘get it’. Perfectly suitable for the simple diags I am creating as part of a larger US Patent process for the cloud computing company I am associated with (ReachIPS.com).

I might post some tutorials re: Inkscape if I discover anything extra interesting…

Well to answer the “where’s Greg question”, I have been very been busy as a little beaver as I have my nose in an ‘Android’ development book for a major project I am working on. I should hire someone to do this part of the project however by the time I tell someone else what I want — I will have the thing done myself, so…

Adobe CS5.5 -- My order is in already, thsi is a game changer (Watch out Apple) !

Well it has happened! — Adobe has achieved the holy grail of computing. Bravo.

You may have heard, the Adobe folks have let their CS5.5 development suite out of the barn and oh my; this is a game changer.

The combination of Catalyst (for the Art dept) coupled with the new mobile Flex/Flash frameworks, coupled with ZEnd on the back grabbing the data from the enterprise end is a winner. No wonder Apple is doing everything to hold this tidal wave back.

So with this combo you can develop the UI in engineering or the Art dept, code the back end to connect to any data source, conform the data via the ZEnd framework and deliver the outputs to Desktops, web browsers, any smartphone and with some finagling Apple iPhones and iPads too.

The only thing Adobe Inc. needs to do here is lower the price (big time) and flood the market with these suites. if they do this they will drive development into the next decade.

My order is in already!

The only downside is to ‘try’ printing out you need to install a special version of OSX that I cant install at the moment due to another project… Will report more when I know more (within limits of the NDA, of course).

I am starting to wonder if all businesses should start to change out old Java model for other more advanced technologies to keep from having to pay patent royalties to the victor of this battle of the titans? At the end of the day you will have to pay somebody or switch.

Java is bloated and unwieldy heavy weight technology anyway and certaintly does not scale into the mobile device space well. There are other ways to get out of this trap while using modern cloud-computing coupled with Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) which will deliver a better resultant AND not expose you to patent lawsuits/fees, going forward.

Contact me as I can help you pursue this course of action,, if your company is/may be exposed. //GH

My answer to a post on Linux.com re: Run MSAccess on Linux? Yes you can !

I am posting this here just in case this mildly tricky solution might be of interest to others.

basically using Virtual Box virtulization / your favorite Microsoft Win32 release and some VBManage Trickery you *can* get an MSAccess data instance through ASP out to the outside world (although I would think that a better solution in the long run might be to convert to MYSQL and use apache, but thats not what they asked)

Anyway, following is a cut-paste of the answer to this question from “Linux.com’

———-

Hi to the group. I think I have a solution for David, in a roundabout way.

Here is a solution that will work (but it may take a day to setup)

a) on your Linux box install VirtualBox (formerly from Sun now from Oracle). Latest release is rock solid (at least on Ubuntu 10.04 that is)

b) Inside of VirtualBox install the Windoze version you have at hand and require.

c) Install MSAccess & any other items inside of your windows instance that you require.

d) Get MSAccess setup properly as you desire, presume you are using ASP inside of your win32 to push your db data out to a browser (if this is what you are trying to accomplish?!) Get this working inside your windows instance, first before you move on.

e) Reroute the VirtualBox ports for web access from inside your VirtualBox virtual machine out to your hosting Linux instance. (think its called VBoxManage command if I recall) For instance VirtualBox (win32) port 80 -> your redirect to be seen from outside (Linux) say port 1234

f) debug from your linux instance using port 1234.

g) if you want the outside world to ‘see the whole linux universe including the win32 VM (with MSAccess on it), you may? need to do some further port redirecting at the linux layer.

Obviously this is a whole lotta trouble, so only you can decide if this is worth it to you.

Cheers from Huntington Beach CA //GHudd

More: Here is info re: port forwarding in Virtualbox…

Found at this blog: http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/12/17/configure-port-forwarding-to-a-virtualbox-guest-os/

…cut-paste…

Alzaf says:
December 15, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I have Ubuntu 8.04 as both host and guest. The only way I could get ssh working is installing openssh-server on both guest and host.

I also managed to get an apache web server working on guest and could communicate with host.

To get this working enter the following commands:

VBoxManage setextradata “VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/HostPort” 8080
VBoxManage setextradata “VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/GuestPort” 80
VBoxManage setextradata “VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/Protocol” TCP

Once the apache server is setup on guest, enter the following commands to open ports on iptables

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp –dport 80 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp –dport 80 -j ACCEPT

To view the web server on host, enter the following command:

firefox “http://localhost:8080″

A great aerial view of the Huntington Beach pier and downtown area is show,

Really amazing what little code it takes to get this snippet up and running with fully functional zooming and rotation features, onto a site.

(comments section)

“iPad: Should Apple Bulls be iGlad or iMad?”

Hi as a technology professional (& a card-carrying iPhone developer) I have a differing take on the iPad than some of the other folks commenting so far.

Obviously I hope & believe that the iPad will have enough success(es) for me to make money supplying custom programs for the device and intend to buy one/more on day 1 of the launch.

I believe lots of businesses will (and should) experiment with iPads (& the upcoming iPad ‘like’ devices from Google / Acer / Android & such) in their businesses as productivity tools (while out on the on the shop floor type of thing).

For the consumer side I only see only one way this device can add to Apple bottom line, substantially — if and only iff Apple wedges themselves into the space between colleges and college students as a mechanism to sell ‘semester sets’ of textbooks to students. At the moment the Kindle cannot fill this space.
Apple has the ‘Online store’ at the ready for distribution. Apple has the connections into the educational institutions already; and of most importance, Apple has a device NOW that can display COLOR charts and graphs that are essential for all medical/engineering/math and biology textbooks (these are the highest profit books too!).

If they can accomplish this then the iPad will be able to make monies in its current form in the short term.

I think the biggest flaw in Apples announcement was that it will not support ‘Flash’ out of the gate (though personally I wish they would patch up their differences here), but that it will not support Adobes AIR runtime, which is a flash player bundled up with a display toolset and wrapped inside a Security model.

I am convinced that this technology is ripe for use throughout the enterprise, right now. If Apple wants to sell lots of iPads to business — they need to support AIR not Flash, and if they roll over and do this then they *will* sell lots and lots of iPads.

Obviously these opinions are mine and mine alone. Cheers to all //GregH

I may be dead wrong here, but I dont think so. Lets see if this point of view goes anywhere with the business types who read TheStreet (myself included, of course).
